SUNY Brockport Lathrop Hall and Neff Hall Rehabilitation

State-of-the-Art Renovations Support Next Generation of Nurses

LaBella was selected by the State University Construction Fund to provide complete design services to rehabilitate Lathrop Hall and Neff Hall at SUNY Brockport into a new, state-of-the-art School of Nursing facility. The Brockport School of Nursing prepares nursing students for professional employment, leadership roles, graduate study, and professional and civic advocacy.

Lathrop Hall and Neff Hall were built in 1951, and having not been significantly updated or renovated, were in a generally outdated and worn condition. Most of Lathrop Hall has been used by SUNY Brockport as surge space to accommodate departments displaced during renovations to buildings elsewhere on campus.

Prior to this rehabilitation, Lathrop Hall and Neff Hall contained classrooms, miscellaneous administrative functions, and the Office of University Police. SUNY Brockport’s Campus Master Plans calls for Lathrop and Neff Halls to serve as the new home for the School of Nursing. A major renovation to the Lathrop/Neff complex will provide much needed space for this growing department. University Police will continue to occupy the ground level of the complex, with a modest planned expansion.

The buildings, which comprised 32,556 sq. ft. of space, were completely modernized with a high level of renovations, including enhanced technology, windows, roof, interior walls and finishes, and building-wide MEP systems. The remaining building programming provides a home for University Police on the ground floor, as well as School of Nursing administrative space, storage for mannequins and equipment, a computer lab, and large meeting spaces. The project was designed to LEED Silver specifications and received certification in January 2017.

In October 2015, SUNY Brockport held a ribbon cutting ceremony for Lathrop and Neff Halls, now home to the college’s state-of-the-art School of Nursing.

Design for Modern Healthcare & Educational Practices

The design for the renovation of Lathrop and Neff Halls centers into a state-of-the-art School of Nursing centers around providing skills and assessment labs with adjacent prep space, which serve as flip classrooms allowing for formal instruction in the center of the rooms with hands-on learning opportunities around the perimeter. Each bay provides articulating hospital bed, bedside accessories, and simulated headwalls and equipment.

A simulation suite provides four simulation rooms, adjoined by a central control room that allow for simulated bedside, home care, and NICU simulations. Technology allows for two-way communication between the control room and sims and session recording. A debrief area allows for video recall and review between faculty and students to reinforce the skills observed.
