Join LaBella at the NYS Veterinary Conference; New Photos of Award-winning Rowan Animal Clinic
Be sure to stop by LaBella Associates booth at the NYS Fall Veterinary Conference at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine for a chance to win a FitBark! The conference will take place from October 16-18. LaBella's veterinary designer Roger Layman will be available to discuss projects large and small, including 2014's award-winning Rowan Animal Clinic, featured in today's post.
In February 2012, a catastrophic fire destroyed Rowan Animal Clinic’s small rural veterinary hospital located in Salisbury, North Carolina. When contemplating replacement, the doctors requested the design maintain the original clinic’s simple, quaint and accessible nature. LaBella worked closely with the doctors to design a facility with rural character, while also providing the modern amenities of veterinary practice. The end result was a 8,850 SF interpretation of a vernacular barn that maintained a rural setting for their large animal practice, while also emphasizing the technology that drives modern veterinary medicine.
The 8 large and small animal treatment rooms are the heart of the veterinary program. These rooms occupy a traditional barn form paired with clerestory day lighting. The natural lighting is calming for animals and comfortable for staff. Design elements like the use of colorful barn-red metal siding and cross-braced sliding doors add the rural character requested by the client. Other clinic functions, like the 35 animal boarding kennel and public spaces, express a more contemporary health care aesthetic with local brick, exposed structure and mechanical ducts, high performance glazing and solar shades.
The area for retail sale of pet nutrition products takes the form of a grain storage silo that was once prevalent in the rural setting. The playful aesthetic is reinforced by the use of sliding barn doors inside the spaces, corrugated metal siding, and bright cheerful colors for the interior design.
This project was awarded the Veterinary Economics Hospital Design Competition Merit Award in 2014.
