LaBella Set to Begin Working with Finger Lakes Downtown Revitalization Initiative Winner: the Villag
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced last week that the Village of Penn Yann, NY has been awarded $10 million to implement their Downtown Revitalization Initiative. Of the hundreds of applications submitted for the grant funding, the Village of Penn Yan was ultimately selected as the first place winner for the Finger Lakes region.
The Downtown Revitalization Initiative is a program developed by the Governor’s Office in partnership with the Empire State Development Corporation, Department of State and New York State Homes and Community Renewal to transform downtown neighborhoods into vibrant communities where the next generation of New Yorkers will want to live, work and raise families.
The Village of Penn Yan is a hub of business and recreational activity surrounded by farmland and it leads the Finger Lakes Region in manufacturing job growth. Rich in history, the Village’s downtown is comprised of tree-lined streets, intact historic buildings, and stunning landscapes. A number of barriers, including the impact of recent extreme floods and lack of housing options, are suppressing Penn Yan’s full potential for leveraging private investment and increasing economic opportunity for all.
LaBella's Planning team is looking forward to working with the Village and local economic development partners on the project. The DRI planning effort will focus on overcoming these barriers and promoting sustained, year-round economic growth by concentrating on four areas: leveraging the abundant natural assets, capitalizing on the growing craft food and beverage industry, using the local art scene as an economic engine, and capturing the intellectual capital that lives and vacations in the Village.
The LaBella team will also identify synergistic opportunities that combine Downtown Development needs with existing community assets, existing or planned public and private investment, and development options. Community priorities will be the guiding force in the project, while sensitivity to public priorities will be maintained through a series of public consultation and community involvement actions.
Kick off for the project will begin immediately with the local planning committee, and initial public meetings are anticipated shortly thereafter.
