BOCES's Creekside Program Gets Poolside Accessibility

Renovations at the Monroe #1 BOCES natatorium are complete and ready to welcome students and faculty when on-campus instruction resumes!

The pool facility was constructed in the early 1970’s, well before the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. As a result, the facility was in dire need of accessibility upgrades. The natatorium is used primarily by the BOCES Creekside program, a center-based program for students with multiple disabilities. Creekside uses a multi-disciplinary approach to build pro-social skills and adaptive living skills.

The facility also had mechanical deficiencies (high levels of humidity and heat in locker rooms), a persistent leak, and a delaminating liner, all of which were addressed with this project. The existing gunite pool shell was rehabilitated and mechanical and electrical systems were replaced. Larger turning radiuses and locker room reconfiguration have addressed accessibility issues. The deep end of the pool was partially filled in to customize the water depth to better support therapy programs.
