Orleans County Bridge Wins APWA Project of the Year Award for Small Cities/Rural Community – Structures Category!
Congratulations to all parties involved with the successful completion of Waterport Road over Oak Orchard Creek Bridge! This bridge was nominated and won the APWA Project of the Year Award in the Small Cities/Rural Community- Structures category. The bridge project was nominated because of the significant cost savings LaBella provided Orleans County. A detailed cost analysis was performed to evaluate repair versus replacement of the significantly deteriorated fascia beams, which showed replacement to be the most viable option. Along with the cost benefits, construction was simplified because the deck overhang and required railing anchorage could be precast with the new beams, providing the county with a superior finished product.
LaBella recently completed the preventive maintenance designs for Waterport Road over Oak Orchard Creek, owned by Orleans County. The Waterport Road Bridge is a 610’ long, 9-span adjacent concrete box beam structure, spanning over Oak Orchard Creek, a tributary of Lake Ontario in Orleans County.
LaBella’s tasks for the recently completed project ranged from detailed inspection and design to construction inspection and management. Primary repairs included prestressed concrete box beam repairs, bridge joint replacement, bridge railing replacement, fascia beam replacement, wearing surface replacement, concrete pier repairs, embankment stabilization and installing waterproofing membrane.
Site constraints were a key element to this project, considering that the bridge is one of only two crossings of this approximately four mile long body of water. This bridge serves as a critical link of the community to access the north and south sides of the lake. The bridge re-opened October 22nd, two weeks ahead of schedule.
