Energy Conservation and Renewable Energy Strategies for Towns
Reducing energy use and increasing renewable energy generation can reduce costs, increase resiliency of utility infrastructure, encourage “green” economic development and respond to constituents’ priorities. Designed to give town officials a fundamental understanding of energy planning, this course will:
explain the terminology and methods used to measure and monitor energy use by type (e.g., gasoline, diesel, electricity, natural gas, propane) and end use (e.g., buildings, vehicles, outdoor lighting);
describe practical approaches to reduce energy use and costs and to encourage additional renewable energy generation, both in municipal functions and throughout the town; and
identify organizations and funding sources that can help town governments plan and implement energy conservation and renewable energy strategies.
Case studies will demonstrate how several upstate municipalities have documented energy use, both in municipal operations and communitywide, and developed achievable strategies for energy reduction and sustainability.
