New Adirondacks Project Keeps Energy Local, Renewable

August 29, 2017

In New York’s Essex County (home of Lake Placid and other Adirondack scenery), the Ray Brook State Office Complex is about to cut greenhouse gas emissions by more than 391 tons a year, roughly the equivalent of taking 80 cars off the road.  A new biomass boiler heating loop, designed by LaBella, is now under construction.  The system will run on wood pellets, a renewable source of energy created from compressed sawdust.  The pellets will be manufactured and sourced in the local area, drawing on the regional forestry industry.

LaBella was hired to engineer the project under our term contract with the New York Power Authority.  Our team’s work included performing an economic cost analysis for various fuel types , and engineering and designing the chosen bio mass system. The boiler plant will be assembled and tested off-site, and then shipped to Ray Brook for final installation and connection to the distribution system.  The boiler was also manufactured in New  York.

The boiler system will serve three facilities on the Ray Brook Campus: New York State Police Troop B, the Adirondack Park Agency, and the State Department of Environmental Conservation (Region 5).  The pellet boiler has 1,4000 gallons of thermal storage, and 2,500 feet of hot water distribution piping.  A building management system will monitor the real-time demand for heating in each building before engaging the pellet-fired boilers.  Hot water will travel from the boiler to each building via underground piping.

Recognizing that the system will also have demonstrative and educational interest, our engineers included a control system that allows for significant data collection on the boiler’s operation.  A small viewing area with windows to the plant will be available to students and visitors.
