On Wednesday, September 13th Director of Planning Ed Flynn presented at The New York Conference of Mayor’s Fall Training School. The training draws approximately 400 city and village officials from across the State together to attend a variety of innovative training sessions specializing in municipal law, government operations and local finance issues.
Ed’s presentation explored the basic steps to identify, evaluate and apply for grants to support community development objectives including infrastructure, parks, economic/downtown development and strategic planning. He highlighted specific state and federal grant programs and their eligibility, limits and timeframes.
He also provided tips on successfully administering grants as well as case studies of how specific projects have been funded by multiple grant programs.
His presentation concluded with implementation tactics to successfully prepare for a grant; everything from a detailed initial project description to how to work through regulations (SEQR/NEPA) and lastly supporting a project through each of its phases. He stressed that even though the 2017 CFA season is over, it’s never too early to start preparing for next year.
Ed is a certified planner with more than twenty five years of experience in planning, economic development, funding and downtown revitalization. Ed has obtained more than $26 million in grant funds, sold and helped redevelop 13 municipal properties, assisted more than 165 small businesses with funding and managed multiple brownfield or economic development projects.
