LaBella Project Featured on PBS's NOVA Series

October 4, 2018

LaBella’s Construction Engineering team was fortunate to be involved with a bridge reconstruction project which was showcased on PBS’s NOVA .

The project is the reconstruction of the Old Blenheim Bridge, a historic bridge in upstate NY that was destroyed by Tropical Storm Irene in August of 2011. Until then, the Old Blenheim Bridge was the longest surviving single span wooden covered bridge in the world.

The “new” Old Blenheim Bridge was designed by Greenman-Pedersen, Inc. Consulting Engineers and Hoyle, Tanner & Associates Engineers, P.C. The bridge superstructure was designed with similar member sizes and details used in the original, but with improved modern materials.

LaBella was retained by the general contractor, Economy Paving Company, Inc. of Cortland, NY to provide Construction Engineering Services for this project. A unique aspect of this project is that the bridge was constructed on the adjacent creek bank and then moved to its final position on to newly constructed abutments. Specifically, LaBella provided the design of the temporary shoring, rendering (picking up) and stabilizing of the trusses at the staging area, the temporary structure used to move the replacement bridge, and assisted in the engineering to move the replacement bridge into place from the temporary structure on to the new abutments.  Below is a teaser for the NOVA episode.  Check your local listings!
