The Transformation of a Rural Health System

St. Lawrence Health System (SLHS) serves the rural North Country region of Upstate New York. In January 2021, SLHS became an affiliate of Rochester Regional Health, an integrated health system providing services across Western, Central, and Northern New York. Following this affiliation, SLHS launched an expansion project that doubled the size of its primary facility, Canton-Potsdam Hospital, a not-for-profit community healthcare center in Potsdam, New York.

The project included renovations to 12,000 square feet of existing hospital space and a four-story, 225,000-square-foot addition. Key design features include a prominent new main entrance and an expanded, state-of-the-art Emergency Department on the ground floor, 30 private medical/surgical beds across the second and third floors, and 18 acuity-adjustable beds across the first three floors. The fourth floor is reserved for the hospital’s future labor and delivery suite, to be completed as part of a separate project.

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department underwent a major expansion, adding 11 patient treatment rooms, a new waiting area, triage rooms with a sub-waiting area, four flexible exam rooms, four resuscitation/trauma rooms, and a new front entrance.

Main Entrance and Lobby

As part of the expansion, Canton-Potsdam Hospital’s main entrance was relocated from the entry level to the ground level. This new entrance features an expanded main lobby, a gift shop, and a coffee kiosk, creating a more accessible and welcoming arrival experience.

Patient Rooms

New, enlarged patient rooms were designed throughout the entire four-story addition, including 60 private medical/surgical rooms and 18 acuity-adjustable rooms. The design also includes dedicated areas for staff collaboration, support services staging, and centralized nurses’ stations to enhance patient care and operational efficiency.

Ribbon Cutting

On Monday, October 7, 2024, Rochester Regional Health – St. Lawrence Health System held a ribbon cutting ceremony in the brand-new wing of the Canton-Potsdam Hospital in Potsdam, NY. The ceremony celebrated not only the new wing and main entrance, which opened to the public on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, but also the opening of the emergency department, which opened its doors Tuesday, September 17, 2024.
