Sacred Heart Cathedral

Beautifying the Mother Church of the Diocese: Rochester’s Sacred Heart Filling Hope

The project brought this 75-year-old Gothic Revival cathedral into full conformance with contemporary Roman Catholic liturgical standards and provides major new spaces for social gatherings, meetings, and administration. The work includes complete restoration of the cathedral interior and design of important new liturgical focal points.

A new narthex, inserted into a former courtyard between the nave and the neighboring rectory, unifies the cathedral complex and provides improved entrances and a generous informal gathering space, as well as access to the rectory and new office wing. A new front entry plaza includes wide steps, lighting, and a ramp for handicapped access. Other site improvements include two new neighborhood parks, a parking lot, and a porte cochere.
