Former Geneva Foundry OU-3 – Investigation and Remediation
State Superfund Site in Geneva, NY Undergoes Massive Cleanup Effort
For more than 100 years, the Geneva Foundry and its predecessor burned coal and coke as part of their operations. This resulted in lead and arsenic emissions from the smokestack settling into the soil on-site as well as within the surrounding community.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) initiated cleanup activities of the off-site area in 2017. LaBella was selected by NYSDEC to assist in the investigation, remediation, and restoration of these properties, of which there are more than 240. LaBella’s role includes soil sampling using a Geoprobe, excavation and transportation of contaminated soil for off-site disposal, and restoration of the properties.
To date, a total of approximately 54,000 tons of lead- and arsenic-contaminated soil have been removed and disposed of and more than 150 properties have been restored. Restoration activities include lawns, driveways, porches, decks, sidewalks, and landscape areas. The community of Geneva has been waiting years for the soil surrounding their homes and businesses to be cleaned up.
