Thompson Health ICU and Pulmonary Clinic Expansion

Improving Critical Care in the Heart of the Finger Lakes

At times, health systems can find it challenging to provide services locally; however, Thompson Health is committed to providing care within their community and minimizing the need for residents to be inconvenienced with travel to a larger urban hospital.

The system’s F.F. Thompson Hospital in Canandaigua, New York, housed a seven-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) that was outdated and critically undersized. To maintain operation in the existing ICU and continue serving the community, it was decided that a new, patient-centric unit had to be constructed alongside the existing ICU.

The new 9,000 sq. ft. unit houses twelve beds, two of which have isolation capability and one of which is an Airborne Infectious Isolation (AII) room. All rooms have an external monitoring station for staff, which provides staff with direct visual access to every patient, thereby enhancing care and reducing fall risk. The new private rooms are spacious and feature larger family bays for comfort during long visits and overnight stays. A private shower facility in mid-unit can be used by patients or their families.

The project also includes a 5,500 sq. ft. Pulmonary Clinic located on the ground floor below the new ICU. Shared workspaces and stairs between ICU and Pulmonary capitalize on the natural synergy between the staff of these two teams. The Pulmonary Clinic has a separate entry for outpatients and houses six large exam rooms. In addition, there are two PFT rooms for testing patients.

Acute Care in the Community

By expanding the health system’s Critical Care Unit from seven beds to twelve beds and incorporating the Pulmonary Clinic on the ground floor, this state-of-the-art project enables F.F. Thompson Hospital to treat more critically acute patients, thereby minimizing transfers to other health systems and allowing Canandaigua residents to stay in their community to receive the care they need.
