St. Lawrence Health System Inpatient Bed Tower at Canton-Potsdam Hospital

The Transformation of a Rural Health System

St. Lawrence Health System (SLHS) serves the rural North Country region of upstate New York. In January 2021, SLHS became an affiliate of Rochester Regional Health, an integrated health system that provides services across Western, Central, and Northern New York. Following this, SLHS embarked on an expansion project that would double the size of their primary Canton-Potsdam Hospital, a not-for-profit community healthcare facility.

The project involves the renovation of 12,000 sq. ft. of existing hospital space and a 225,000 sq. ft. addition. Design features include a new, prominent main entrance along with an expanded, cutting-edge Emergency Department on the ground floor with three floors of inpatient private rooms above. The second and third floors each house 30 medical/surgical beds (60 beds total), while the fourth floor is shelled for future expansion and modernization of services.
