This project involved designing a prestressed concrete spread box beam bridge on integral abutments to serve as a replacement for an existing, deteriorated T-beam bridge on SR 3021 in Butler Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
Key facets of this project included the following:
Minimizing the project footprint to eliminate the need for archeological studies due to the presence of an old mill upstream of the bridge
Designing the substructure elements to account for the large boulders and rocky soil encountered when drilling the piles for the integral abutments
Ensuring that the piles could be installed and the abutments could be constructed without impacting an 8-inch-diameter gas main present beneath the streambed on the upstream side of the bridge
