SR 3021 Section 352 Bridge Replacement

Much-Needed Bridge Replacement in Butler Township

This project involved designing a prestressed concrete spread box beam bridge on integral abutments to serve as a replacement for an existing, deteriorated T-beam bridge on SR 3021 in Butler Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

Key facets of this project included the following:

  • Minimizing the project footprint to eliminate the need for archeological studies due to the presence of an old mill upstream of the bridge
  • Designing the substructure elements to account for the large boulders and rocky soil encountered when drilling the piles for the integral abutments
  • Ensuring that the piles could be installed and the abutments could be constructed without impacting an 8-inch-diameter gas main present beneath the streambed on the upstream side of the bridge
